Does My Car Insurance Cover Rental Cars?

Does My Car Insurance Cover Rental Cars?

Short answer: if you own a car and carry a personal auto policy, it often extends to a rental. But "often" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and the gaps are where people get hurt. If you don't own a car, your nonexistent policy can't extend to anything, so you're starting from zero.

Here's how to actually know what you've got before you stand at a rental counter.

How do I find out if my policy covers rentals?

Call your insurer and ask. That sounds obvious, and it's still the step most people skip.

When you call, get specific. Ask whether your policy covers a rental vehicle, whether it covers damage to the rental car itself or only damage you cause to other people, and whether there's a limit on the rental's value or how long you can rent. Ask them to confirm it in writing if you can. A five-minute call beats a five-thousand-dollar surprise. Our car insurance basics page walks through the terms you'll hear.

Where does personal coverage usually fall short?

A few common gaps show up again and again.

Some policies only carry liability, which covers the other driver's car and injuries, not the rental you're driving. Many carry a deductible you'd still owe out of pocket. And personal policies often limit coverage by the rental's value or the length of the trip, so a longer rental or a nicer car can quietly fall outside your protection.

There's also the income question. If you plan to drive the rental for Uber, Lyft, or delivery, almost no standard personal policy covers that, and most rental coverage doesn't either. It's a gap a lot of gig drivers don't find out about until they're already filing a claim. That's a different conversation.

What if I don't own a car?

Then there's no policy to extend, and the rental counter knows it. This is the spot where a lot of travelers feel cornered into the counter's expensive add-on.

You have another option. Bonzah sells primary rental coverage you can buy directly, in a couple of minutes, whether or not you own a car. It's the situation we hear about most: someone shows up carless, assumes they're covered somehow, and finds out at the counter they're not. CDW (our Collision Damage Warranty) handles damage to the rental vehicle, and RCLI provides primary liability coverage to state minimums, with a $0 deductible. You can get a quote before you ever reach the counter.

I'm visiting from another country. Does my insurance work here?

Usually not. Auto coverage from your home country generally doesn't apply to a rental in the United States, and that catches a lot of international travelers off guard. If you're visiting and renting, plan on arranging coverage that's valid here rather than assuming your policy travels with you.

Doesn't my credit card already cover this?

Sometimes, partly. Many cards offer rental coverage when you pay with the card, but it's often secondary, which means it kicks in after your own insurance, and it rarely includes liability. Read your card's benefits guide before you count on it. Treat it as a backup, not a plan.

So what should I actually do?

Check your own policy first. If it covers rentals the way you need, great, decline the counter and go. If it doesn't, or you don't own a car, or you're renting in a country where your coverage doesn't apply, line up rental coverage before your trip instead of deciding under pressure at the desk.

A couple of things worth knowing about Bonzah specifically. Coverage is primary, so it doesn't sit behind another policy. Every driver listed on the rental and insurance agreements is covered at no extra cost. And there are some vehicles we don't cover, so it's worth a look at our excluded vehicles list if you're renting something unusual.

I read and answer the emails myself, and I'd rather clear up a coverage question before your trip than after.
